About It
Custom Smilies (previously named Custom Smileys) is a plugin for WordPress 2.0+. This plugin gives you a chance to personalize your posts and comments using smilies of your choice instead of default ones.
Custom Smilies (older than version 2.0) is written by QAD. Thanks for his great contribution.
I have upgrade it to let it been compatible with WordPress 2.5 or greater. That’s all I do, but I will perfect it in the future. So the most is written by QAD. Thanks again.

You can get the latest version of Custom Smilies here. Get it
How to install
- Download and extract custom-smilies.zip; then, upload init.php and custom-smilies.php to the /wp-content/plugins/custom-smilies directory. Upload smilies folder to the /wp-includes/images directory..
- Activate Custom Smilies in your Admin Panel
- Put your smilies in smilies folder (wp-includes/images/smilies/)
- Change the emoticons by navigating to Manage > Smilies and complete the form
- If you want to add clickable smilies to your comment form, append these lines to your current theme’s comments.php file, just before the form begins(You don’t need do this if your theme suppor the action named comment_form since version 2.3):

For ‘Paged Comments’ plugin’s users: Please place that code in wp-content/plugins/paged-comments/themes/your-theme-name/comments-paged.php to enable those clickable smilies.Please note that you can customize this list by going to Options > Smilies.Wanna play with the smilies yourself? A function called cs_all_smilies() has been added, which return all the smilies you’ve got in this format: Array (’Smilie’ => ‘Path to smilie’)
How to upgrade
For Custom Smilies 1.0 and 1.1 users, simply replace the file custom-smilies.php in your plugins folder with the newer one. Do NOT overwrite init.php, as it contains your smilies’ definitions.
For those who are still using Custom Smileys version 2.4 (which was released more than 1 year ago!), you can upgrade it to the lastest version by following this procedure:
- Backup your database! (better safe than sorry – i’m not responsible for any data loss caused by this plugin)
- Move all of your smilies to your smilies folder (wp-includes/images/smilies/)
- Deactivate Custom Smileys 2.4 without uninstalling it
- Download, extract, then upload Custom Smilies 1.0 to your blog
- Activate Custom Smilies 1.0 in your Admin Panel
- Delete custom-smileys.php if you wish

Custom Smilies 是一个 WordPress 插件。它可以让你自由地在你的文章和评论中使用表情来代替默认的表情。
我（Crazy Loong）修改了以前的版本，使它可以工作在 WordPress 2.5 下。

Custom Smilies 2.0 是我（Crazy Loong）更新的。2.0以前的版本是由 QAD 编写的。
安装 Custom Smilies 后，你可以把自己需要的表情添加到 WordPress 的表情文件夹里（wp-includes/images/smilies/），然后在 Manage > Smilies 里添加表情对应的字符。非常简单哦。
设置好以后，这些表情就可以在任何文章、页面和评论里使用了。例如，当你输入 :D, :), :|（你可以自己定义这些符号）时，就会在文章出现对应的表情。或者，通过在点击相应的图标来插入到文章中。
你还可以添加这些表情列表到你的评论框周围。这样，你就可以进行可视化操作了，并在评论中方便的使用表情。而且，这个列表可以根据你的需要进行调整，以满足你的要求：

I love this plugin, but why doesn’t it show up in Internet Explorer? It works great in Firefox, but when I use IE at work, the clickable smilies on the comment form don’t show up.
Any suggestions?

Hello. Currently, it shows the smilies that I wanted to show in the comments form but when I click on “show more,” it reveals all of the smilies in the smilies folder. Is there a way to only put which smilies I want for the comment form? Thanks!

I just wonder in which way the smilies are sorted…It seems to be the ascending file name, but sometimes a smilie appears in a unexpected place (for example a file named 02frech_08.gif before 02frech_07.gif in my blog).
Is there any way to influence the sorting order?

I just upgraded to version 2.3 of your plugin. I encountered a problem with integrating smilies into the commentsform. I used this code (as in previous versions):
to print smilies above the textarea.Now the smilies are displayed twice. One time at the place i put the code in, and one time after the comment submit button. How can i remove the automatic added smilies (the second one)? And: Is it right, that the init.php file is no longer needed?

but i have another question: there are some validation errors within your plugin: line 279 column 116 – Warning: ‘<’ + ‘/’ + letter not allowed here…
Is there a way to resolve it?

I love this plugin. I’m currently using WP 2.6.2, and recently upgraded (through WordPress) to plugin version 2.3. Prior to the uprade, clickable smilies showed up on the create new post page when I was writing a post. But since the upgrade, they don’t show up anymore. Hello! Thanks for this! What I like in 2.3 is the “more” to see More smileys.
What I do Not like in 2.3 is the same problem as Lee says. The smileys appear twice in my comment form, because I already use the PHP code to put the smiley form in my comments.php template.
I will remove line 368 for now. Can you please make the option in 2.4?

But, I have some problem. Sometimes, the smiley code didn’t converted into image on our comments. I saw this problem on some blogs using this plugin.

Thanks. I checked; that’s not my issue. That folder has not been renamed. I did update through the WordPress auto update — should I try downloading from the website and updating manually? Would that make a difference?

I reloaded the plugin manually; nothing changed. I did find that if I switch to the visual editor I get a button that opens a popup window with smilies, but not down below “categories” like it shows in the screenshot. Is this correct?

Same like DB, I have same problem too…
And I found that sometimes If I write my comments like this
Then after I click submit, that line converted into only one line (sometimes the smiley code didn’t converted into image to). So the line will be:
To fix it, I must edit my comments and add extra enter hit, so the line will be separated (but with extra space).
Another way is I edit my comment, and add tag to separate that line…
Hope you’ll fix this problem

在后台的设置里面，有一个叫留言框ID的项目，你可以在里面填入comment。
我建议你重新下载一个开发中的版本，http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/custom-smilies-se.zip，覆盖一次。并重新启用插件。

The next thing, as a future request. Can you make it possible to save the custom smilies in wp-/content/smilies/ ? It would be more in the flavor of 2.7 and auto updates where you put everything you like to save in /wp-content/ :)

我找到了原因, 可能是在genlist.js.php 裏的 javascript variable “smilies_list” 長度有限制, 當我使用200張表情符號, 而每張也是大約10字代碼和檔案名稱, 就會出錯… 請問可否改寫不將所有的圖像連結放在同一variable裏嗎?

Hi,
I am using your plugin on a site but I was trying to get the smilies posted above the comment box with no such luck yet.
I’ve looked for “You can remove the line 368 in for25.php, so it will be the same as 2.2.” but I am using WP version 2.7 and there is not that many lines in either for25 or for27.php
I’d like to just use the php code so I can place the plugin where ever I’d like to match the custom theme. How can I go about doing this?

Hello,
Custom Smilies in the Dashboard causes server overload in Firefox. Just got suspended a few hours ago after clicking twice on the smiley link in dashboard.
2 clicks and viola! suspended right away.
Would be great if you could fix it. probably a bug or something.

Because your theme set the img element as block, you must add the code as the following,
img.wp-smiley-select {display: inline;}

The CSS and JavaScript for this plugin is not added to the head tag but added before the smilies. This resulted in validation issues. Can you please edit it such that those codes are attached inside the head tag instead of being in the middle of the page?
And is it possible to arrange the ordering of the smilies?

I have planed to add the function in the next version.
Now, you can do it in this way,
1. Export the option table to SQL from your old site.
2. Open the SQL file, delete all data except the rows whose option_name is ‘clcs_smilies’ or option_name is ‘clcs_options’.
3. Input the SQL to the option table in the new site.

Hi, I’ve just download and used your wonderful plug-in (the lastest), but I have a problem. I can only use custom-smile in Dashboard – Quick Press. When I want to use function Add New Post, I can’t click onto smiles-emoticon to add them into my writing. Otherwise, Smiles appear in my comment form, but other user and I cannot use them by clicking, but it’s done if I insert the text (ex :D :P >:D)

I’ve figured out how to rearrange the layout of the smilies. it’s pretty simple, but it does involve going into the SQL database. If you aren’t sure of what you’re doing, don’t do it, as you can very easily screw up your entire blog by clicking the wrong button.
Here’s how to do it:
0] backup your database. You should be doing this regularly anyway.
1] Sign in to phpMyAdmin.
2] Go to the database name on the left (this will be the name you chose when you created your database), and then into wp_options.
3] Look for a option_name called clcs_smilies. When you find it, you should see a bunch of text similar to a:40:{s:7:”:arrow:”;s:14:”icon_arrow.gif”;. Click the edit button (it looks like a pencil).
4] Copy and paste all of the text into a Notepad window.
5] Each smilie has it’s own relevant details, like
s:2:”8O”;s:12:”icon_eek.gif”;
or
s:9:”:twisted:”;s:16:”icon_twisted.gif”;
You should be able to work out from these which smilie is which. Each smilie will start with a letter then a colon and then a number
s:9
and will end in a filename and then a semi colon
“filename.gif”;
Make sure you cut and paste all of the relevant details for the smilie.
6] Save a copy of the details in the Notepad window, in case you get into a mess.
7] Cut and paste the smilie details into the order that you want them in.
8] When you’re happy with the layout, copy and paste the details from the Notepad window, into the phpMyAdmin window. Ensure that only the date you’re pasting is there. Highlight and delete the data that is already in there, or you’ll end up with the smilies being repeated.
9] Once it’s all done, click the Save/Go button in the phpMyAdmin window.
10] Go back to your blog, and check the layout. If it’s wrong, repeat the steps above until it looks right.
It’s quite simple really, but it pays to be careful, and not click on any other buttons in the phpMyAdmin.

I’ve discovered something new, the Smilie Icon is missing if I am going to reply to a comment from Admins-Backend. That’s is what I recently wrote here. But if I am going to edit an existing comment, i still don’t have the Smilie icon, but I got a new button named “Smilie”. This button is opening already know PopUp with the smilies on.

I just realized that I used a very, very old version and when I updated to WP 2.8 I also installed the current version of custom smilies.
I expected a popup window to appear because one can define height and width in the smilie options page, but there is no popup window. Is there anything one has to do to make this work?
For some reason, Solomon’s solution did not work for me. The order of the smilies in the admin panel was fine, but in the comment form they are mixud up again.
It would be great if you could include a feature in a coming version to influence the order of the smilies. =) Or maybe it is possible to put them in categories, for example first the funny ones, then the sad ones, and so on?
I have a lot of smilies and I do not want to delete many of them, but without any order they’re hard to use…
I have tried a lot of smilie plugins during the years I use WP, but yours is the only one that works with the current WP version, is easy to install and use and offers features like the more / less link.
Please keep up the good work!

I just suggested it would be better that plugin automatically adds the similies at the top of the comment area rather than under the sent button.

This automatical function depends on a hook in theme, so the smilies are located by your theme, not this plugin.

I love this plugin and its the best smilies plugin I think. However, I have some problems.
1.) It renders the XHTML invalid. There are validation errors on my blog (the comment page) where the smilies are above the comment form. For example:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://bouncy-bubbles.net/2009/08/30/procrastination/#comments
All those errors are due to this plugin
how to fix them?
2.) I can not add clickable smilies on my pages. The smiley icon in toolbar of posts work and I can add smilies by clicking the smiley icon, it open the small pop window with all smilies but when editng a page, clicking the smiley icon does not open the popup
Please help! I dont wanna switch my smilies plugin. I love it too much

Another way to rearrange the smilies is to upload them in the order you want them to appear. Delete everything in your smilies folder, and then reupload the images. They’ll appear based on the time/date you added them to the folder.

就是本来表情是显示在最下面的，我想让它显示在评论框的上面，就在comments.php相应位置处加了上面这个代码。但是以前在底部的表情还是存在的，造成了两行表情的问题。所以想问下，怎么把原来显示在底部的表情删除掉。如果还不明白的话，进我的博客，问题摆在那里的。

Hi! I have changed to hosting, and now when I try to insert a custom smilie in some post the window with custom smilies appears very little and empty. (screenshot in http://es.tinypic.com/r/1179pjq/3).
I have uninstalled the plugin, remove the puglin folder a install again, but the error continues.
I have seen the error console of Firefox and I have obatin error in my wp-admin/post-new.php file, concerning to: smilies_list4wysiwyg is not defined.

有一个不算BUG的bug：
我用的是inove主题，将插件代码插入在紧挨着评论文本框上方，有两排表情，没有全部显示出来(即用more显示更多表情)，这时候如果我在表情下面插入一行中文文本，再点击more的话会将该文本撑到文本框中，英文文本就不会，而且只在IE下会出现，FF等不出现

itss about the WP-Backend => List of all Live-Comments, I am missing the button to add Smilies into the form where I am going to reply to a comment (screenshot 01). If I am editing my recent comment-reply, I’ve got the button called “smilies” (screenshot 02).

Hello everyone, I have a concern with Custom Smiley.
The concern is that all the images do not display all the time, for example if I put-at-at-at It will nomaly have three pictures of aceclovers. Only two of the three displayed.

but I’m not sure how to integrate that function to show smilies above submit button.
My code look like this:
comment_form(array(‘comment_notes_after’ => ‘some text’));
which ll print ‘some text’ below comment text area and above submit button (which i want). But how to integrate here function cs_all_smilies() to print smilies on the same place.. I have tried few times and none worked..

Hi, you need use cs_print_smilies(), not cs_all_smilies().
You can use it as the following:

你好，我很喜欢这个插件，但是我在添加新文章的时候点击那个笑脸，弹出来的窗口中全是显示的红叉。。
看你在上面说过可能是因为和某些插件冲突导致的，但是我在停用除了Custom Smilies以外的所有插件后依旧如此。。
并且，如上面某位朋友所说，第一次弹出是在右边，关闭后再次点笑脸，它就跑左边去了，超出了左边显示边界
请问如何处理呢？感谢
（我是在wp后台直接安装的2.9.1）

您好，现在有个问题想问您，我已经安装此插件了，就是想让在前台评论上也实现和后台文章管理一样的效果：一个小表情，然后点击它之后弹出个窗口，然后再窗口里再选择所需要的表情，就是和后台完全一样的不要more那种！

In the settings of Custom Smilies, you can find the input field named “The ID of comment textarea”. The default is “comment”, you can fix it.

Hello
I have version 2.9.1 of Custom Smiles, and I have tried to change the .gif files for the smiles.
The problem is that the smiles appear at the start of the line, not in the place where they are typed.
I changed the .gif files by uploading the files to the directory, and then assigned them symbols in the wordpress dashboard. I have not changed the custom smile files.
Please help! thanks!

I have a problem with the plugin using version 2.9.1 of the plugin and WordPress 3.0.3. If I have more than 13 defined smilies, the little box that pops up on the New Post page doesn’t load properly.
If I have more than 13 smilies, it looks like this:

It doesn’t seem to matter which smilies I define or what size the files/images are. Any ideas?

I’ve been using this plug-in for a while and it worked perfect.
I wanted to add a smilie, so I added the smilie to the smilies folder and it is shown in the options pannel. But when I try to add a “what to type” to it it doesn’t remember the shortcut when I update it. The smilie stays in the undefined smilies category and the “what to type” becomes empty again…
Please help

[...] 這inove佈景用了一段時間，對岸網友寫的，整體上來說還算棒的，它在wordpress曾經是很熱門的佈景下載，目前為止已經快破50人萬次，一群世界各地wordpress愛用者也為這主題提供了相當多的當地語言，甚至出現以inove為藍本所作出的佈景供人下載的狀況，雖然inova好用但還是有美中不足的地方，除了經常會跟別的網誌撞衫外，被人垢病的就是字太小，現在電腦的使用者螢幕越來越大，現今最少1024+起跳，相對的如果不改就似乎不太適合再繼續使用，筆者試著去找新的主題，但怎看都還是沒有更好的或是也差不多，於是想一想不如直接改他的設定，讓inove還可以再用一段時間，每個新主題都會花時間去修改，有時往往改到最後才會發現不太適合自己使用，浪費時間，與其如此不如改現有的，之前累積一些經驗應該沒問題，畢竟inove也算好用，只要將問題改進滿足15寸螢幕以上使用者就會好很多。 更動明細〔只說明有更動到主題的部份含UI〕︰ 一︰將原有的佈景尺寸由936PX改成980PX，可在1024螢幕下呈現近滿版及將少數幾個英文字中文化，達到全繁體中文。 二︰頁首圖片高度改成200px採隨機展示圖片，並將頁首跟頁尾上下多餘的空間移除。 三︰更動所有icon，選擇自己喜歡的icon替代。 四︰將文章及分頁字體改比較大些，這樣看起來舒服多了，原首頁圖示改成文字顯示及所有分頁使用粗體字並將隔線移除，more也改成粗體，這樣好分多了，也比較協調，大一點的螢幕看字體也還好不會像之前那麼小。 五︰每頁文章及分頁內容使用Change Font/-size外掛，讓讀者可以再隨自己閱讀習慣調整字體大小，外掛顯示前頭加上icon至css裡。 六︰文章用html語法加上六個推文書謙，使用外掛WordPress Related Posts讓文章結尾顯示相關文章增加其他文章閱讀率及增加函數顯示文章最後更新日期時間並將文章發表時間與更新時間顯示至秒。 七︰使用外掛Custom Smilies，讓訪客可以留言時選擇表情符號，將留言input的顏色改成黑綠二色，感覺原有的顏色好奇怪跟主色不符，使用外掛WP-PageNavi分頁功能取代wordpress原有簡單的分頁功能，將留言頭像由32px改成60px並將留言的RSS移除。 八︰將頁尾wordpress的logo圖樣及連結更換成自己的logo與連結並使用函數將wordpress連結標示於網誌站內資訊，使用另一個java script取代原有的置頂功能。 九︰在css裡加入月曆標示當日語法並將格線移除。 十︰模組只使用北並將東南西三個移除。 原設計式樣︰inove。 修改過後式樣︰修改版inove。 更動的好像就這些，在ie、google、firefox這三個最新版本瀏覽器下看是都一樣，有改沒想到的下次想到再加上來，雖然花了點時間但感覺上就好很多，不知道是不是自我感覺良好，但自己用起來要舒服是很重要的，說不上是山寨版只是將一些自己認為該修正的地方作一些修正，更符合自己的使用習慣。 [...]

I’m testing the website in local with easyphp, i was waiting to fix all bugs I found before upload it… I think is very strange because the plugin works correctly with chrome and IE. any ideas? any suggestions?

Hi, momentarily all smiles are Case Sensitive which diminishes the efficiency of this wonderful plugin!
For example, if I have a smiley set to appear on :p and a commenter types :P instead of :p the text won’t be converted into a smiley, and will appear just as text in the comment.
Please fix this BUG, or if some people do not consider this to be a bug and they consider it to be a benefit, then please just add one little check box in the plugin’s settings with the following function:
“Disable Case Sensitive For Smileys?”
I thank you for this great plugin! You’ve done a great work with it, it is the best!
I hope you’ll take my request into consideration.

Hi. I’m having an issue with my interface on editing and creating new/old posts. When I click on the little smiley face next to the “Add Media” button the box pops up with my smilies. http://i47.tinypic.com/2u57r6x.jpg
When I click on the box again, the box moves all the way to the left and cuts off half the smilies so I can’t see all of them. http://i50.tinypic.com/xuhcg.jpg
I have tried editting the CSS to position the box more to the right but the CSS it is in is in an inline style sheet. When I copy the code and put it in my theme’s CSS style sheet it doesn’t work. Is there any way to fix this??
